"Baby, it's cold outside!" The gal in the picture above could probably use a crackling fire, or at least a good warm coat. However, since she's obviously stuck where she is, she should have taken a good book along.

Yes, a good book is one of the best (and most affordable) ways to escape winter chills. Tuck yourself into your favorite chair or sofa, snuggle up under an afghan or blanket, and let yourself be whisked away to the place you have always dreamed about visiting.

If you check out my books here, you can look for your ideal destination, click on any of the covers to order the book, and enjoy new friends and share in their adventures.

Looking back over the past year, it has been a very good year. I have moved to a new house, right here in Amberg WI, that people describe as "a doll house" when they come in for the first time. It is smaller than the former one I was in, but it seems to "fit me" just right. I will be hosting an open house again this year, which is my way of saying "Thank you" to all the people who have so warmly welcomed me to their neck of the woods. The only thing I can't figure out is where on earth did that whole year go? How can it be December already?

Just a little hint of what's ahead for 2010. I am working on something I vowed I would never do. I am writing my memoirs (just up through Ivan's and my 9 years in Venezuela). Many of you have asked me to share those experiences, so I have given in. I hope to have it out early in 2010. Following that will be a novel, The Green Year (El Aņo Verde), that is set in the four areas we worked in during our time in Venezuela. It is a medical inspirational romance. Hopefully, it will be out by spring.

Meanwhile, I wish all of you a very happy holiday. Do not forget that Jesus is the reason for the season. He blesses us in so many ways, sometimes without our even realizing it until we look back later, that we need to count our blessings instead of sheep. And may your New Year be the best one ever!

SEE YOUR NAME IN LIGHTS

Click to join The Playhouse

A long time ago I learned about online e-groups for writers. I joined many of them, and each one serves a different purpose. One advantage to belonging to these groups is that there are a lot of great ideas bantered about. The best part of it to me, however, is the great friends I have "met" (virtually) through these groups. People all over the world. People who have become like a part of my very own family. I always wanted a sister, but never had one. Now I have some gals who have become so close to me that we consider ourselves true sisters.

Of all the groups I belong to, there are 3 or 4 of them that stand out head and shoulders above the rest. One of these groups is Jay's Writers World. Jay Hudson started the group. He has been going through some tough times lately, so if any of you feel like adding his name to your prayer list, it would be much appreciated by all of his followers. His group is nicknamed "The Playhouse," and it fits it well.

It was in The Playhouse that I first met Linda Della Donna. Her name sounds like an alias, but she is as true blue as anybody I've ever met. When we first met, Linda was mourning the loss of her husband. We had no idea that just a little more than a year later, that would be something we would have in common. When I felt blue or down after Ivan died, Linda was there for me. What I didn't know was that she had adopted the practice of getting a "daily JES fix." That was before she posted this comment on my blog:
I am just stopping by to tell you that I visited your website, and now your blog. What a treat. I am so impressed at your missionary background. It feels good to know that once upon a time there was Ivan in your life and I was privvy to some of those precious moments. I love your writing. Indeed, you are so prolific. It's always been a comfort to me to know that you are out there. I look forward to returning for my "daily dose of Janet." Good luck and cyber hugs.

And so it is with great pleasure that I put Linda Della Donna's name up in lights this month. Click on the sign to get to her blog.

HERE'S YOUR PASSPORT TO FUN!
IT'S BEEN A LONG TIME COMING

...and the price is right! Yes, IT'S FREE!

What is it? It's my "Sampler." It has the first chapter of each of my now-available books, plus a sneak peek at three new ones that will be out this year. It's all together in one volume, which I will send to you as an e-mail attachment.

In the first week it was out, I sent out over 400 copies of the Sampler. Women copied it off to take to the laundromat. Doctors copied it off to put in their waiting rooms; it beats those year-old magazines! Over 100 people wrote to tell me which of the book/s they had ordered. People wrote to ask me when the future ones would be available.

How can you get it? Just send an e-mail to janetelainesmith@yahoo.com and it will be on its way to you in a matter of a few hours. It's a good way to have some fun!
When you have finished reading the Sampler, if you have printed it off, give it to someone else. If you want to copy it to a disk for your friends, go right ahead. If you want to e-mail it to someone, be my guest. It is a Biblical principle: give and it shall be given onto you. This one is yours to give freely to anyone you want to share it with. Spread the word!

WALLACE MEMORIAL

The Keith Trilogy still outsells all of my other novels. If I can find a few thousand extra hours, one day I will bring them to America. Our first Keith, Rev. James, arrived in Bridgewater Massachusetts in 1662. It was just after the British Civil War, and (in my head) there are 7 books that will follow the next 7 generations of American Keiths, ending with the close of the US Civil War. As my best friend from Grand Forks always says, "But not today." Still, it is something to tease you just a wee bit.
